Kids and Fevers – Don’t Freak Out

Blog

If you’re a new parent and want to stay as prepared as possible to help your child in the event of a fever, there are a few things you can do ahead of the situation presenting itself.

But before we get to those items, we always recommend that you identify an ER near you such as Express ER in Temple to make sure you know where they are located. Also make sure you put their information on any contact lists that you leave with caretakers. Having this information readily available will keep you from freaking out.

Stay Calm

By staying calm, you’ll be able to provide the best possible care for your little one without being distracted by worry. To treat the fever at home, follow these tips:

  • Give your little one plenty of fluid
  • Place your little one in a room with a temperature between 70°F to 74°F for maximum comfort
  • Keep your little one comfortably dressed and cover him or her with a light blanket if you notice them shivering
  • Another idea to help stop shivering is to place your little one in a lukewarm bath. Note: You should never use ice baths or alcohol rubs in an attempt to reduce your child’s fever
  • Giving your child any medication such as Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin should be discussed with a healthcare professional before administering

When to Seek Emergency Care Temple

Every situation with every child will be different, and you should discuss timing with your pediatrician ahead of needing urgent care in Temple, TX; however, following is the standard guideline used by most pediatricians to use as a determining factor to seek emergency care:

  • Newborn babies up to three months old that have a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher
  • Babies older than three months old with a temperature of 102°F (38.9°C) or higher that lasts more than 24 hours

When in Doubt, Seek Emergency Care

If you’ve noticed that your little one isn’t wetting their diaper with the same regularity or they’re experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, this could indicate that the condition warrants immediate urgent care.
